Crochet Cabana - Here you'll find a thoughtful collection of well-illustrated tutorials on broomstick lace, granny squares, borders, and Tunisian (afghan) crochet, among other things. Includes a thorough discussion of how to change yarns and/or colors, ideas for working in ends, and a Hints/FAQ page.

Originals by Gidge - This delightful website offers 52 individual lessons on crochet stitches and related topics. Instructions are lucid and the photographs are large and detailed.

Needlecraft University - You can view this site's illustrated instructions for basic stitches, but more valuable are the abbreviations, glossary terms, and yarn weights that are listed and explained here, as well as the table of hook sizes and conversions. StarGazer's Crochet and Craft Links - The scale of this well-ordered index staggers users; listed are links to thousands of free crochet patterns. The links are not always up to date, but the huge number of patterns still accessible through this site will quickly convince you to overlook the dead ends.

Patty's Patterns - The Italian-influenced English in the comments may leave you scratching your head, but the pattern instructions are clear. The quality of the 175 original designs for doilies, lace, and granny squares makes this a site worth visiting, despite some popup advertising.

Digital Granny's Virtual Afghan - So retro-hip a concept someone just had to do it. A sort of visual database of afghan squares--over 500 in all--this site links you to step-by-step instructions for each. Your browser's Back button won't work here--avoid frustration by clicking on the site's miniaturized afghan to navigate.

Dishcloth Boutique - Free patterns for--what else?--dishcloths are on offer at this highly regarded site. (Remember that most of these designs can be adapted for face cloths, hand towels, afghan squares and strips, and scarves, too.) Be sure to check out the message board for the newest patterns and tips.

Groovy Crochet - If you love to get down with Woodstock-era fashions, prepare to be blown away. Crochet yourself back in time with these authentic patterns from the '60s and '70s. Featuring items like ponchos and bikinis, the vintage photos alone are worth a look.
