Free Crochet Patterns for Afghan Squares & Blankets "Free Crochet Patterns for Afghan Squares & Blankets"

Digital Granny's Virtual Afghan - So retro-hip a concept someone just had to do it. A sort of visual database of afghan squares--over 500 in all--this site links you to step-by-step instructions for each. Your browser's Back button won't work here--avoid frustration by clicking on the site's miniaturized afghan to navigate.

Solutia: The Smart Yarns - More expertly designed afghan projects, with clearly written directions and fashion photography. Knit projects--which are clearly indicated as such--are listed together with the crochet patterns, and there are a few clothing projects, too.

Crochet Cabana - This site offers a small but very nice assortment of baby blankets, afghans, and throws. Multiple photographs and thoughtful, thorough instructions--combined with very helpful tutorials--make this an ideal place for new crocheters to look for a project.

Patty's Granny Square Collection - Granny squares presented conveniently with thumbnail photos. The quality of these and the other designs here--primarily lace and doily projects--makes this a site worth visiting, despite some minor popup advertising.

Craft Yarn Council Crochet Patterns - All the items on this site are worth a look, but in my opinion it is the stunning and unusual afghan designs that warrant the most attention. These patterns and photos are of professional quality.

Free Baby Crochet Patterns "Free Baby Crochet Patterns"

Lion Brand Yarn - There’s so much here...these superb patterns, which include designs for afghans, clothing, accessories, and toys, are professionally designed and proofed. The patterns for baby items are worth special attention; most are suitable for beginners to intermediate crocheters.

Bev’s Country Cottage - This site features a very large selection of preemie and newborn baby patterns. Includes related charity projects and links. Note that there are knitting patterns mixed in with the crochet projects--look for the letter code next to the project name to figure out which is which.

Crochet ‘N’ More - Offers several patterns for baby accessories, including designs specifically for preemies. One of my favorite projects here is the ABCs baby afghan.

Craftown - Baby clothing and blankets are among the best of the large selection of projects here.

Free Vintage Crochet Patterns "Free Vintage Crochet Patterns"

Antique Crochet Patterns - A treasure trove of old patterns, this collection includes clothing, tablecloths, doilies, blankets, and other home accessories. Nearly all the patterns are accompanied by a period photo. Be sure to check out the 1917 ladies' cardigan.

Jodhi--The Potholder Lady - Despite the name, this site features a broad range of items. Nearly everything here, from kitchen stuff (yes, there are potholders--about 80) to garments, is a vintage pattern. You’ll need Adobe Acrobat to view and print these reproductions.

Crochet @ Knitting-and.com - This Australian site offers some great historical patterns, as well as a few new ones that are well worth a look. Ann's Beaded Crochet Amulet Bag is my personal favorite. As a bonus, there are some stitch instructions, too.

Crochet Treasures - Nice selection of vintage patterns available for free. (You can access hundreds more through a paid membership, if you like.) I'm particularly fond of the 1918 Child's Coin Purse Pendant. One of the more unusual projects is the 1955 Milk Glass Casserole Cover, which mimics the look of hobnail glass.

Groovy Crochet - If you love to get down with Woodstock-era fashions, prepare to be blown away. Crochet yourself back in time with these authentic patterns from the '60s and '70s. Featuring items like ponchos and bikinis, the vintage photos alone are worth a look.

Free Holiday Crochet Patterns "Free Holiday Crochet Patterns"

Chez Crochet Free Projects - You’ll find variations on the venerable granny square here, among other things, but the excellent and large selection of holiday and seasonal decorations is what makes this site something special.

Crochet Collection’s Christmas Patterns - Some 70 Christmas projects are listed here, ranked by level of difficulty. All instructions feature photographs. Be sure to explore the other sections of Crochet Collection while you're visiting--you won't be sorry.

Hugg'ems Collectables - There are all sorts of items here, but the holiday-theme ones are some of the best. I especially like the Christmas "lights" and the beaded garlands (there are several). This is a long page; scroll down to find the listing of free patterns.

Free Crochet Patterns for Clothing & Accessories "Free Crochet Patterns for Clothing & Accessories"

Knitting-Crochet.com - Some of the best patterns at this site are for clothing. In particular, check out the shawls, the women’s Aran Pullover, the leg warmers, and the standard beret. Also offers a large number of patterns for blanket and afghan squares, but be warned that not many of these are pictured.

Beadwrangler - Features some truly lovely and artistic designs for beaded jewelry and other accessories--plus one really great squid.

Crochet Partners Pattern Library - This index features patterns for all kinds of crochet projects, but its accessories categories are the strongest of its offerings. You’ll find hats, scarves, bags, and a healthy assortment of hair scrunchies. Be aware, though, that some of the patterns have no photo.

Free Home Decor Crochet Patterns "Free Home Decor Crochet Patterns"

StarGazer's Home Decor Links - This generous listing of miscellaneous home decor projects is merely the tip of the iceberg. The scale of StarGazer's well-ordered larger index staggers. Not all of the thousands of links are up to date, but you can still find nearly any kind of crochet pattern here.

Dishcloth Boutique - Free patterns for--what else?--dishcloths are on offer at this highly regarded site. Be sure to check out the message board for the newest patterns and tips.

Celt’s Vintage Crochet - A wonderful collection of old doily patterns, nicely presented in a consistent format and accompanied by photos.

Patty's Patterns - The Italian-influenced English in the comments may leave you scratching your head, but the pattern instructions are clear. The quality of the 175 original designs for doilies, lace, and granny squares makes this a site worth visiting, despite some popup advertising.

Free Crochet Patterns for Toys & Gifts "Free Crochet Patterns for Toys & Gifts"

Crochet Patterns - This site features some fabulous stuffed animal and doll designs, as well as other gift ideas. Be sure to check out the pony, dolphin, and bunting doll for starters. You’ll also find some good baby and holiday patterns here.

Barb’s Nook - Here's a designer with a sense of humor. Check out the Fashion Doll Bear Costume for a Barbie outfit that's nearly surreal.

Dolls & Accessories - The doll clothes and simple accessories on offer will keep many a child happy.

Colorful Crochet - The bookmark patterns are the ones that really shine; Columbine is my personal favorite. There are plenty of other projects to explore here, too.
