New York Times--Today's News "New York Times--Today's News"

New York Times--Lead Stories - In spite of recent upheavals in its newsroom, the Times is still the best general newspaper in the country. Its web site, which has won numerous journalism and internet awards, provides online versions of current stories. Breaking news appears throughout the day.

New York Times--International News - For a quick overview of world news, this page offers a compelling combination of news reporting and lighter features.

New York Times--National News - Although it's called the New York Times, the newspaper focuses as much--if not more--on national news stories as it does on local items. The city's tabloids like to think of city news--especially about the boroughs outside of Manhattan--as their turf.

New York Times--Washington & Political News - Along with national stories, the Washington news beat is where the Times has often distinguished itself.

New York Times--Regional News - For important local stories--from pollution on Long Island to the Ground Zero reconstruction--the Times provides in-depth coverage of the big stories. The Voice and Observer may sometimes scoop it, and the tabloids may give better scandal and crime, but the NYT is still an essential read.

New York Times--The Sections "New York Times--The Sections"

New York Times--Business - With such good writers as Gretchen Morgenson, Floyd Norris, and Geraldine Fabrikant covering the markets and corporate sagas, this section offers a compact overview of the big stories. Media and advertising are another highlight. The human-interest business stories make for fun reading.

New York Times--Technology - The Times reports on technology the way the History Channel covers Egypt--medium-light on the complexity, high on the wow factor. You do come away informed. The main thrust here is technology in every day life--and the technical background to front-page news stories.

New York Times--Science - The Times has a long tradition of popular-science writing that keeps the geekiness under control and the news context up front. A story about the discovery of ancient skulls, for example, focuses on the historical significance of closing the link between prehumans and modern humans.

New York Times--Arts - Full of reviews and features about theater, movies, books, music, gallery openings, dance, museum shows, and the rest, the Arts pages cover a wide swath of cultural territory. Even those critical of the depth, however, will still stop in to take a look--just to see "what the Times says."

Travel--Sophisticated and Otherwise - A good place to take a nip of wanderlust. You'll find personal-experience articles about retreats in Norway and beaches in Costa Rica. Although participants don't single out the Times for bias, the paper does come up several times and two of the panelists did write for the paper. Strong views abound.
